Water - ‘the essential resource’ . Today we imparted our ‘Hydration and Water’ element of the bushcraft syllabus we teach .
The day was evenly split between theory and practical . We’ve always believed it’s essential to understand why processes work, how they work and how to adapt .
Understanding this subject involves ; rule of threes, human physiology, our requirements, symptoms of dehydration, procurement, storage , sanitization and more .
We hope this today will further our students on their outdoor journey and also serve up useful life lessons .
A fantastic ‘experience’ and very enjoyable morning spent ‘Truffle hunting’ . Lucy and I had a wonderful time learning about Truffles with @sulistrufflehunter .
Dan took us out in to some local woodland with his amazing dog ‘Winnie’ and gave us a real insight in to this fantastic ‘art’. The conditions were perfect to allow Winnie to flourish under Dan’s guidance . We ended up with a little hoard and more knowledge. Out in the woods … Breathing in ‘Pinenes’, following tracks , lighting fires , building shelters and enjoying ‘the outdoors’. Proving again that the simple things in life give the best rewards . We hope that we are equipping the young students with life skills that will better prepare them for the future . If you follow the media the future seems somewhat uncertain in many ways and building ‘self reliance’ maybe the best lessons we can pass on to future generations. Walk daily , stay fit , read , keep your passions alive and grasp failure or hardship and learn from them . If you study Bushcraft or Wilderness Living you will do all of the above ….

Deep deep in the woods , the students ‘created’ a wonderful lean to shelter made from what nature provided . What a scene …. Practical, Comfortable and fit for purpose . Sheltercraft , as a means of protection, is probably one of our top skill sets and yet is very often underestimated. In our last session we investigated ‘Clothing and Protection’ in our first foray in to “Sheltercraft”.
We discussed layering systems , heat loss mechanisms, clothing related to climate , venting , hypothermia , material types and so much more .
Then we went further on our ‘journey’ in to Knifecraft and Firecraft . The students created their first feathersticks . Sending our condolences to the family , friends and students of Lars Fält. Lars was one of the ‘Masters’ of Bushcraft and Wilderness Living Skills ,most particularly in the Arctic and Boreal zone.
I was lucky enough to spend , just one week , in his company many many years ago . It was my first wilderness trip and ‘foray’ in to Bushcraft. As an instructor he was superb but he was more than that to everyone he met. Seven days of Lars has left its ‘indelible mark’ on me . Go well Lars …
One of those ‘wow moments’. Just tidying up, whilst in our woodland camp and this magnificent Buzzard flew over my shoulder and in to the nearby stream . I took advantage and quickly snapped off a couple of photos . Nature and the outdoors have the propensity to keep on gifting us all with magical moments..”Get outdoors”!
Interestingly … I acquired this old and ‘iconic’ book a few years ago . The Book of Woodcraft by Ernest Thompson Seton . On the ‘off chance’ I looked in to the identity of the boys who gifted and received this book . The Woodhouse’s. What I discovered , in summary, was a story of family turmoil and loss , the devastation of World War 1 , Squires, Gentry , Misadventure and a family responsible for inventing Marsala from Sicily .
This book has taught me more than it ever intended to !
