One of the plants that has followed me on my ‘Bushcraft journey’ is Cattail. In every environment I’ve been to , in ‘the North’ , it has been a ‘constant’. I would class it as a ‘Super plant’.
When we started to develop the pond by our cabin , growing cattail was a given. How beautiful it looks and what fantastic memories it evokes . But it needs to be ‘kept at bay’ with some frequent harvesting. So after nine months of regular Bushcraft and Wilderness living instruction, these students are adept at feeling at home in nature . They now possess many skills and knowledge that are beyond much of our adult population. We hope that they build on this foundation and pass on those skills . What a superb group they were !

On the eve of our student’s ‘Bushcraft Quest’ we’ve looked over the last sixteen years of end of year wilderness skills tests. There is always a serious element based on the Fundamental skills. But we hope that these days are experiences that will create memories which will last far beyond their youth. Let alone skills which will become life long ‘catalysts’.

Our favourite way to prepare and ‘cook’ Trout . Ponassed , placed in a split stick and slowly grilled n’ smoked over the embers of an open fire . A technique ‘popularized’ by Ray Mears - Now common place throughout Europe and more especially here in the Uk.
