Every year , from early Spring through to mid Summer, this plant helps us to explain the joy of foraging to our clients . Pignut (conopodium majus) is a woodland plant with a tale and lessons to be learnt . It is a fantastic wild edible , abundant in ‘ancient woodland’ but not the easiest to extract and it belongs to a family of plants which host dangers . After producing ‘digging sticks ‘ , understanding the plant root structure and a few tips we soon ‘gently’ removed a good haul .

A beautiful day in the woods with our young students . Over the past few months we’ve been teaching the bushcraft basics or the fundamental skills required to ‘thrive’ in our wilderness . But today was about ‘immersing’ these young folk ‘in the nature’ . From ground level right up to the canopy . Looking at detail , studying flora & fauna , tracking , zooming in , appreciating detail , sitting spots , “fitting in”… Thoughts about Grey Owl’s ideas regarding conservation and stewardship . An absolutely beautiful day … The sun was out and the temperatures were in double figures . Bird song all around us . The ‘bush is neutral’ but on days like today nature is a ‘mega force’ and everything or anything is possible . Fantastic !

A session from last week , post our ‘Scottish foray’, teaching the ultimate part of ‘protection and shelter’. What you wear or should wear on your travels and time in various environments.
What to wear and how to wear it is very much an art in itself . To be comfortable for days on end in various environments and climates requires experience, an understanding of your own physiological requirements, tailoring , layers , natural materials , technical layers and systems . We hope to offer prepared our young students for future woodland excursions , wild family holidays and Duke of Edinburgh expeditions.
Turn up the volume …
One afternoon, in the Glen, listening to the burn and those fabulous birds . My dear Lucy and lovely daughters helped plan and make this fab trip a reality . We will be back ! It’s , as they say, “heaven on earth”.

Today’s group studied ‘The importance of Water’:
Its uses , our physiological requirements, rule of threes, symptoms of dehydration, procurement, sterilization, a water plan for travel ….
The young students went on to study ‘Gypsy wells’, Transpiration bags , filter systems . We then completed our day with lighting fire . Many skill sets depend upon our ability to light fire in all conditions…. Fantastic day !
