Finding ‘Fat Wood’ is a fantastic aid to fire lighting especially in ‘challenging conditions’. Resin rich wood from the knots or roots of coniferous trees are nature’s fire lighters . Searching out tinders and processing them is another fundamental wilderness living skillset.

A bag full of birch bark and ‘Sunshine’ ! I can remember many many years ago being told that the Birch tree was ‘The Tesco’s of the woods ‘. A few courses and books later I soon realised that understanding the Birch tree ‘unlocks many doors’ in the outdoors .
Our young students worked as a team using the ‘Bow drill’ to create an ember . Lucy nestled it in the tinder bundle and skillfully created ‘flames’. Lots of lessons learnt.
