In between the light rain showers we had a brilliant day . Lucy demonstrating and teaching some basketry using our ‘homegrown’ cattail/reedmace . Expanding how simple mats can easily evolve in to baskets . We discussed the importance of this wonderful plant through its various uses and ethnobotanical links .
We went on to discuss sheltercraft and sleeping systems/ procedures. Other topics covered included Sticks and their importance in the outdoors and a short session of archery .

A fantastic day of learning more ‘Craft’ led by @lucyhot99 . The students were first introduced to the huge variety of natural resources available to us and their various uses . In practice Lucy demonstrated Willow and its uses , more especially ‘ basketry’. She went on to discuss early pottery , figurines and the processes required to produce ‘practical’ pots and clay containers .
The students also enjoyed some time brushing up their knife skills and archery . Thank you @lucyhot99 . The students @springmeadschool really enjoyed this very practical day.

Our last ‘session’ was devoted to Sheltercraft and protection. Getting your ‘clothing system’ and shelter craft skills ‘on point’ are absolutely key to thriving in your environment.
I can remember ,way back ,to a discussion with Mors Kochanski when asked “What is the single most unappreciated skill in ‘bushcraft’ ? “ He then replied “Sheltercraft !”. And of course I agree , getting all the ‘nuances’ right , is often very difficult.
During our day we discussed :
Heat loss mechanisms .
Clothing systems .
Shelter relative to climate and environment.
Shelter types.
Shelter location.
Fire and shelter relationships.
Bed or cot.
Shelter construction techniques .
Tarps and Lavvuus.
Tripods and Lean tos .
